Maskhadov, while in the underground mode and not have a full understanding of what is happening, to believe in this possibility, as received from its representative abroad intensive reports to confirm this information.

Since the initiative, unveiled by Maskhadov, came from Russia, the president of Chechnya in early 2005 announced a unilateral moratorium on conducting offensive combat operations. This decision is perceived to wide acclaim in the world. Moratorium has put Russia in a very unpleasant situation: the whole world was convinced of the reliability of Russia's leadership claims that Maskhadov allegedly has no control over the structure of the armed resistance, and therefore "negotiate with him is useless." Most of the leading countries in the world has to diplomatic pressure on Moscow, calling for Russia's leadership to resolve the Russian-Chechen armed conflict through peaceful, political means.

At the end of February 2005 President Maskhadov in the Chechen local intermediaries have received from Russia by the offer of a meeting for peace negotiations. And for this purpose Maskhadov offered to meet with Russian officials, who, with safeguards to keep it in place for the negotiations. On the morning of 6 March 2005, Maskhadov, accompanied by such intermediaries came to the place for negotiation, which already was delivered from the Special Group in Moscow by the FSB.

6. March in the first half of the day, Maskhadov, was met with a senior official in Russia. But instead of negotiations, Maskhadov issued an ultimatum was invited to publicly renounce the presidential election post, "repent" and to encourage Chechen fighters lay down their arms under an amnesty guarantees and the right to travel to a foreign country. Chechen President categorically rejected such proposals, after which he was betrayed and killed. Russia's secret service was ordered by President Putin of Russia to kill Maskhadov in the event that he refuses to accept Moscow's proposal. Later, on 8 March had the body of the Chechen leader was taken to the village of Tolstoy-Yurt in homeownership M. Yusupova, where the former Maskhadov remained for several days.

The investigation has established the names of the most important partners for conspiracy, as well as the place where the crime was committed. However, for the sake of the ongoing investigation of this information is not made public.
